A DESIGN SCIENCE APPROACH TO REDUCING HOSPITAL ACQUIRED INFECTIONS

Design Science is a problem solving discipline introduced by Buckminster Fuller that focuses on evaluating core goals of a problem.  Applied to reducing HAIs, it revealed inherent limitations of the existing disinfection approaches would restrict their abilities to reduce HAIs much below current levels.  However, it also found a slight shift in the disinfection goal offered a solution that shared none of earlier limitations and result in significant improvements in HAI reductions.

UV Angel is a groundbreaking product for the safe disinfection of actively used and difficult to disinfect surfaces such as keyboards, mice, touchscreens, tablets, or button panels.

UV-Angel blocks cross-contamination and uses no harsh chemical disinfectants. There is no breeding ground for chemical resistant pathogens.

UV Angel incorporates a small UV-C lamp that when mounted over any high-touch surface applies DNA damaging UV-C radiation around the clock and without human interaction.

UV Angel’s UV-C radiation destroys both the DNA and cell structure of pathogens before they can produce resistant prodigy. UV-C radiation has been validated by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) as an effective pathogen control method.

How UV Angel works

UV Angel’s UV-C radiation is only applied to a surface when no activity is detected. Its internal passive infrared motion detector (PIR) immediately disables the radiation when motion is detected near the protected surface. Once motion ceases, the UV Angel restarts its disinfection cycle. High energy UV-C radiation can destroy pathogens in seconds but is dangerous when people are nearby. UV Angel uses a longer exposure period (60 seconds or more) of low power UV-C radiation that is safe when used near people.

A multi-color LED indicator on our UV Angel clearly identifies the disinfection state of the surface. A green light indicates the surface is clean. When the surface is touched (the PIR indicates activity), the status indicator turns red to caution users that the surface may be dirty. Then after a short period when no activity has been detected, the disinfecting radiation is turned on and the status indicator turns blue. This cycle is repeated continuously throughout the day.

Disinfection Method Comparison

The surface protection from UV Angel is far superior to other methods such as chemical wipes or radiating whole rooms with high energy UV-C radiation. 

Chemical Sanitization

Applying disinfecting chemicals is a labor-intensive step and requires the surface to be completely wet for 3 minutes or more. These chemicals are also caustic and damaging to plastics and electronic equipment. Misuse and overuse of antimicrobials is one of the world's most pressing public health problems as infectious organisms evolve over time to adapt to the antimicrobials chemicals designed to kill them thus making the drugs ineffective. People infected with antimicrobial-resistant organisms are more likely to have longer, more expensive hospital stays, and may be more likely to die as a result of an infection.


Whole Room UV Disinfection

Whole room disinfection involves placing one or more high intensity UV-C light sources in a room to irradiate all of the room’s surfaces. The high output required to disinfect all surfaces is hazardous and requires the room to be empty and the lights operated remotely. A typical treatment can take up to an hour or more. During this time the room and it equipment are completely inaccessible.
